As of this writing, there are 384,823 players online and 303,256 matches played. And this version of Halo multiplayer is as good as they get.
Of course, chances are quite good that most players are going to spend a lot more time on the multiplayer game than the single-player game. (Bungie explains that by saying there were a lot of experimental weapons on Reach that were later lost technologies.)
